In 2022, Tears For Fears once again reminded us what made them so huge in the 80’s. Proving they still got it when they performed live one of their most successful hits, “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.” Which released in 1985 and topped the charts in multiple countries worldwide.
As soon as the song begins, it’s like a blast from the past. Those familiar guitar bars come in and we’ve been teleported back to 1985, at least for a brief moment, back to the golden age of synth pop.
Curt Smith takes the lead vocals with his still characteristically husky, smooth voice and delivers as strong a performance as on the original record. And not to count out Roland Orzabal either! His guitar playing really added more vibrancy to this rendition. Especially toward the middle of the song with the unforgettable guitar solo.
The backup band also deserve their props, as they also elevated the performance with their obviously talented drummer and keyboardist who fit right in and delivered magic.
The song originally came from their 1985 album Songs from the Big Chair. Fusing power with irresistibly catchy melodies, it became an anthem of its age. Whether you’re a long-term fan or just getting into their music, this is a must-watch performance. Even after decades, Tears For Fears show that their songs (and their talent) are timeless.
